We went to the New Hampshire Renaissance Faire in May. Bethany wanted to wear a yellow dress. Toward they end I realized that she looked like Princess Belle!

I bought this pattern last year for a $1 at Joann Fabric on one of their sale weekends! We used the gypsy pattern for the main dress but made it a size big so it was long enough and it would last longer.

I was going to make the sash/belt from the the pink dress but I ran out
of time. I had made a simple toule underskirt to wear underneath that
was too long. When I shortened it I took the extra fabric and tied it
around her waist to make a sash/belt! I also let her take my lace parasol that a friend had given me!

The biggest thing I learned while making her dress was that the fabric unravels like crazy!!!!! All day it kept unraveling and picking up twigs and leaves! I need to either serge the seems (not that I have a Serger), fold them under and sew them inside of themselves, or get some fray stopping stuff.

Here are pictures from throughout the day!

I am the one in green and white... not my favorite outfit but I did make it!

Since then I have made three of them!!!! Each had problems and one was a serious disaster!

To start I needed to make an under-bodice. It us like a full slip with a bodice attached to the top. I will not post pictures of me in it as it is very see through!

The first dress was not bad... It was designed for my pregnancy for my son though so.... it had lots of room in the front! I found a cute fabric that had flowers in my favorite fabric (purple!) to make the bodice. I used off white muslin for the skirt. Also, the neckline was rather high but as I had hand stitched that part there was no way I was ripping it out! (My friend and sewing buddy made her own and I love it!)

The next dress was a complete disaster but beautiful! It was made of a sheer fabric with a silky fabric underneath (such a pain!!!) I had made it so that I could nurse my baby in it (he was just over a month old at the time I was wearing it!) I did not have time put the clasps in the top part so I had my friends pin me into it. I also had missed judged the side seam and had to wrap my friends scarf around my waist to hide it!

There is no picture of this one because it was that bad!

The third dress was blue with a print on the bodice. It again was designed for nursing my little one but I made the skirt too full. The sleeves where a problem this time... I did not like how they looked but when I pushed them up and I liked them much better! (Again my friend is in the picture and you can see that she altered her gown with a pretty ribbon!)

I have altered these dresses since and will be posting them soon!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153709701055059778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-262749874468553061.post-12451899080799244612012-04-24T11:25:00.000-07:002012-04-24T11:25:07.639-07:00Tool Tuesday - Scissors

I want to start posting more but with two little ones underfoot I am not always able to complete projects quickly. So I decided to start posting "Tool Tuesday" when I don't have a project to share.

Scissors

I good pair of scissors is important as it can make a difference between a straight smooth line and a jagged one that does not line up when you need to sew.

These are my scissors. The work well and the did not cost very much. There is a big rule in the house that no one is to use them unless they are cutting fabric! I have lost more then one pair of scissors to them being used on other things!

I found some funny things when looking at different types of scissors The first one is something called Powered Scissors. Not sure I would trust it to cut strait!

These have a laser on them and claim to help you cut strait. Again I am not sure how they work as there where no reviews but that seems like a lot of technology for a pair of shears!

These are my dream shears. They are beautiful, in a box, and gold! I love that there is a separate pair for cutting thread. I hate grabbing my big scissors to cut threads as I am sewing and I hate the thread cutter on my sewing machine.

Then last minute I decided to also make a tie, vest, and pants for my son as well as a simple shrug for my daughter. I found some tutorials online. Some I used completely while other I used as a guideline.

Easter Baskets: I love for the kids to get a new outfit with their Easter baskets every year.

I decided to try and make one with out a pattern!

First I picked up my supplies: Green for the outside, purple lining, batting, fusible interfacing, and a fancy button.

Then I started to cut out the fabric. Tip #1 Measure! Ooops... First I made it too long, then it ended up crooked in the end. (I still love it though.)

I had decided to make the outer part have pleats in it to add interest. I started by pinning 3 pleats in the "middle" (I did not measure them again and so they are off center on mine.) Tip #2 Sew pleats into place underneath... I kept having to fool with mine and make them sit still.... in the end that caused them to be in the wrong place.... They still look nice though!

Next, I cut out the lining to the same size as my green out fabric. (Make sure you make it strait as this was where most of my measurements where off.) Then I fused the lining to it and pinned the batting to that.

I had to sew the lining to the outer (right sides together) but I also wanted a clean line on the part where I sewed up the sides. After trial and error I finally got it correct. Here are a couple of me testing the length and folding process.

She loves green and ladybugs so I picked this fabric up for her a while ago.
I had not gotten around to making anything out if it though. So today I used some ideas I got from other clothes and had cut the pieces out (I did not use a pattern.) I will sew it up tonight and see how it comes out!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153709701055059778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-262749874468553061.post-71923755275728785682012-01-24T11:30:00.000-08:002012-01-24T14:02:46.271-08:00Long overdue update on corset!

I promised an update on my corset and never got to it! I made an underdress and cloak to go with it! Purple and green are my favorite colors and I love butterflies so I used those things to make the outfit! Here is a picture of me at the Ren Faire in full garb!!!!

I was very comfortable wearing it while standing. Then we sat down to eat... that did not go so well. I do love it though! I did get to wear to other side of my corset (it is reversable) as part of my pirate outfit but did not get a good picture of me in that.

The cloak was a lot of fun to make. I special ordered the trim and clasps. They go perfectly with the fabric! It was also a great weight because it can be rather warm at the faires. I would like to make a heavy one too for when it is cooler outside.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153709701055059778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-262749874468553061.post-14974559033673511482011-04-08T17:38:00.000-07:002011-04-08T17:39:16.808-07:00Underbust Corset for Renaissance FairesI go to Renaissance Faires every year. I have 3 different outfits I have worn in the past. This year I am making another new one. My baby is almost 6 months old and therefore still breastfeeding. None of my old outfits will work to feed him in. So I started a new outfit. A simple underdress with a underbust corset that I wear with my own undergarments.

I started searching online and I found a few great websites to help get me started. And since credit must be given where credit is due... these are the two that helped me the most with how to get started and what supplies I would need.

The Necromancer's Palanquin

Sidney Eileen

I wanted it to be simple but also fun. We go to different type of Ren Faires. Some are more historical while others are more fantasy. That is why I wanted to make sure it was reversible. I also wanted to make it out of fabric that I already had.

These are the first pictures I took of it. It is double sided with butterflies on one side and plain green on the other side Since then I have made it shorter (I am very short waisted.) I had to take out all of the boning, cut it to the right length, and then reinsert the boning.

Patterns just are not fitting me right. So I bought a new book instead of patterns and I am so excited to get started!

In this book you use your exact measurements to cut out a piece of muslin or other similar in expensive fabric (adding some inches for seams.) Then you pin the muslin to yourself while wearing a thin undershirt. From this you create pattern blocks. They then show you how to turn those blocks into basic wardrobe pieces. There are some shirts I am really excited about. I have some fabric to make some summery stuff out of the patterns.

I had been getting discouraged because I bought a pattern and when I tried to tissue fit it (see Gertie's 3 part Vlog) it was so ill fitting (even though in my size) I was shocked! I could not even continue and said I did not want to sew anymore. But I got over it and found this book.

Now if I can just find where my daughter put my measuring tapes I will be reading to go! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153709701055059778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-262749874468553061.post-15054801794896852182010-01-13T18:22:00.000-08:002010-01-13T18:22:09.706-08:00A Purse Full of Fustration!I had many problems with this purse. Much of it due to my own misreading of instructions and choice of fabric.

I chose to use cotton that i found on sale. Many parts of the construction where very easy. I had misread one step which gave me 2 hours of frustration. The fabric was not stiff so I had to add interfacing. Then I did not like how the zipper went in so I had to play with that. I also decided to give it a lining as it did not have one.

Some good things about the pattern where, I loved making the strap. It has great, easy to make pockets on the outside, and it is nice and spacious.

Not the best pic but here it is. It does have a squared bottom but it got set on the floor so it look weird.
This is a pic of me making the strap. I actually had fun getting the fabric to fold right and ironing it into place.

I purchased some patterns and fabric the other day as I said in my previous post. This is one of the patterns. (I am in the process of contacting NEWLOOK/Simplicity and I may end up taking photo down if they wish me to do so!)

I am making the shirt the model is wearing but in blues.

This is the first time I have ever done gathering and I think it came out well... I used the thread pulling method for gathering. I am so proud of how it came out. Sorry about the fuzziness of the photos, my camera does not do well in low light but I did not want to have the flash creating problems with the photo either.

I will post photos when I am done with the rest!
For patterns I got two shirts, a skirt and a bag/purse. I had some of the fabric so that saved me a bit of money. I also bought some sewing supplies I need like bobbins. I hate only having one bobbin thread. Now I have a package of 8 and can have a different bobbin for each of my projects! I am going to have to stay out of that section of the store or I am going to be tempted to buy a new project every time I go in! The frustrating thing is that I have to wait to start sewing because I need to wash the fabric first..... why can't it be pre-washed?

The skirt, shirt, and bag I am going to make should go together and look nice. I can't wait to get started! I am going to start with the bag and then make the shirt. Finally, I will make the skirt. I am hoping to have it all done by nest Sunday so I can wear my outfit to church.

I have also been working on finding a good apron pattern so I can make one for me and one for Bethany. I have some cute fabric but I am having a hard time deciding between a half or full apron and how fancy to make it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153709701055059778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-262749874468553061.post-21670362142404775012009-12-29T19:11:00.000-08:002009-12-29T19:11:46.451-08:00A Regency Dress Part 1I just purchased a pattern from a great Regency website named Sensibility. I am so excited to get started sewing. A friend of mine and I are going to be making outfits together. She chose the simpler pattern, while I choose the more difficult one. I don't want to infringe on any rights so I will not post photos from that website but will post them as I start the project.

I still am not sure what fabric I will use. I have seen so many ideas that I like but I don't know which one to choose! I am not sure if I will make a morning, afternoon or evening dress. I would like to make a morning dress that can become the others by adding a new layer. We shall see when the pattern gets here as to what I make!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05153709701055059778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-262749874468553061.post-920141686788689162009-12-29T18:40:00.000-08:002010-01-08T15:49:04.231-08:00A Scrubs TopA friend of mine asked me to help her by making her mom a scrubs top out of Patriots fabric as she could not find one at all. I had no clue what pattern she had picked out. I had a fairly easy time at it except the neck line. There were some instructions that did not make sense. I made my way through it well enough to finish it and be pleased. It was a lot of fun to sew. Her mom was very excited about it and could not wait to wear it.
We made pillows first since it was all straight lines. I gave them as Christmas presents to my Mom. Next we made a simple jumper for me to wear to school and church. One year I wanted to make a skirt for the first day of school so we set on that adventure.

After that I did other projects through out the years such as shirts, vests, couch covers and more pillows. I kept working on my basic skills. I got a sewing machine shortly after I got married and I love that machine.

Last summer I decided that I needed to make myself a new Renaissance outfit as I had outgrown my old one and wanted the challenge myself with a sewing project. I used a pattern for the top but made the skirt from my mind. I am fairly happy with it. (I also made my hubby's tunic with my mother-in-law.)
